You can move your car driving test online at any time up to the start of the test. The rules changed in 2026 and they’re stricter than before, so check these before you change anything.
The 2026 rules in short
- You have to do it yourself. Since 12 May 2026 your instructor can’t change your test for you.
- You get 2 changes for a car test. Changing the date and the centre together counts as one change. If DVSA moves your test, that doesn’t count.
- You can only move to a nearby centre. Since 9 June 2026 you can only switch to one of the 3 test centres closest to the one you booked.
- Give 10 full working days’ notice or you lose the fee. Monday to Saturday count; Sundays and bank holidays don’t. Other test types need 3 working days.
Because you only get two changes, speak to your instructor first. Moving to a date you’re not ready for wastes a change and often a test fee.

The DVSA online service runs from 6am to 11:40pm. New test dates are released 24 weeks ahead, and cancellation slots can appear at any time.
Should you move your test earlier or later?
Earlier makes sense if your instructor says you’re ready now and you’re comfortable on the local routes. Book a mock driving test first so you know where you stand.
Later is the better call if you’re still making serious faults in mock tests, or you haven’t driven the test routes in real traffic yet. Passing first time is cheaper than rebooking.

Changing between Rochdale and Chadderton

If you have to change at short notice
If you move your test with less than 10 working days’ notice you’ll normally pay again. DVSA may refund you if the reason was out of your control, such as illness, a bereavement, a school or college exam on the same day, or a stolen licence. Email DVSA customer services with proof (a fit note, a letter from your school, or a crime number) and your licence number or booking reference.
