Book a test online
You’ll be put in a queue when you start booking your driving test – you’ll be told how long you’ll need to wait once you begin.
You can book a test up to 24 weeks in the future. There is no waiting list or cancellation list.
This service is available from 6am to 11:40pm.
New booking rules for 2026
DVSA changed how practical driving tests are booked in 2026. Here’s what it means for you.
Only you can book your test
Since 12 May 2026, only the learner taking the test can book and manage it. Your instructor or a parent can help you pick a date, but you need to log in and book it yourself. Your instructor can’t book, move or cancel it for you.
You can change your test twice
You can change the date or test centre up to 2 times. After that, the only option is to cancel and book again. If DVSA cancels or moves your test, that doesn’t count as one of your changes.
Moves are limited to nearby test centres
Since 9 June 2026, you can pick any test centre when you first book. If you move it later, you can only move to one of the three test centres nearest to the one you booked, or keep the one you have.
So pick the centre you want from the start. Our test centre guides for Rochdale and Chadderton can help you choose.
Swaps
DVSA doesn’t run a swap service. If you find someone to swap with, you both need to call DVSA at the same time. Your instructor can’t do it for you.
What we suggest
- Talk to your instructor before you book, so your test date matches when you’ll be ready.
- Book the test centre where you’ve been practising.
- Keep your changes for emergencies.
Book your test on GOV.UK.
Before you start
You need your:
- UK driving licence number
- credit or debit card
- driving instructor’s personal reference number if you want to check they’re available
When you do not need a theory test
You must usually have passed your theory test before booking.
You do not need a theory test to book a:
- test to upgrade from automatic to manual
- test to progress through the motorcycle categories (progressive access)
